Australia is the skin cancer capital of the world with two in three people developing some sort of skin cancer before the age of 70 (The Royal Children’s Hospital, 2019). However, research shows that children are particularly sensitive when it comes to the sun which makes the first 15 years of skin protection vital for our children (Cancer Council, n.d.).
Cancer Council, Australia’s leading skin cancer research charity has provided tips on how to manage skin protection for our children, including the new phrase: Seek, Slip, Slap, Slop, and Slide (Cancer Council, n.d.). To avoid sunburn, it is encouraged to seek shade and cover your child’s skin as much as possible by wearing tightly woven fabrics. It is also important to wear a wide-brimmed hat and sunnies!
Sunscreen is an essential part of as child’s everyday routine. It should be applied 15-20 minutes before going outside. Make sure it is reapplied every two hours and always after getting out of the water. If possible, avoid activities during peak UV ray time (10am to 2pm) with children under 12 months should not be in the sun when UV levels are above 3 or higher (The Royal Children’s Hospital, 2019).
