Surviving Flu Season

By By iVitality November 10, 2022

When children are unwell, it can be tough on the whole family. Cough and cold symptoms such as fevers and runny noses, lead to sleepless nights and heightened emotions for all members of the family - not just the sick bub! Here are our top tips on how to manage flu season with little ones and get back to doing what you enjoy most in life!

Flu season can be difficult for busy families. However, there are ways to make this time easier. Stuffy noses are a common occurrence and can be quite irritating for kids, making them (and their parents) miserable. Luckily, there is an array of medications and natural remedies out there to ensure your child is back to their normal health in no time!

One great natural remedy for the symptoms of colds and flu is lukewarm baths or cool face washer compresses. These can assist in reducing fever which will provide almost immediate relief. For chest and nose congestion, increasing humidity in the child’s surrounds can help and can be achieved by using a humidifier in their bedroom. Any kind of menthol rub, either placed in the humidifier or on the child’s chest (or feet!) is useful as it can help open the airways and help your child have a better sleep. Gargling salt water is another option to decrease the severity of cold symptoms including nasal congestion. Certain foods help with managing a cold and can be incorporated into meals which include chicken soup, ginger, honey and garlic. (The Healthline, 2019).

If natural remedies aren't helping or if symptoms are severe,  there is an endless supply of medications to help. We always recommend visiting your GP or speaking to your local pharmacist for advice before giving your child a new medication.

One natural product we absolutely love is NoseFrida. It is an all natural nasal mucus extractor that helps clear congestion in babies and toddlers who can’t blow their own nose. The simple device places a soft plastic nasal tube just inside the babies nostril and with a light suction from the parent or carer, clears the babies nose.  Its benefits are the super hygienic disposable filters which have been clinically proven to prevent the transfer of mucus or bacterial germs when clearing stuffy noses. The blue nasal tube, red mouthpiece, and filter cap are also dishwasher friendly and safe for cleaning.

This device is perfect for blocked noses and is recommended by paediatricians for all ages (NoseFrida, 2022).
